Yongpyong Resort – Part of Olympic Facilities and Ski Slopes
The Baekdudaegan Mountain Range is spectacular and one of the things that are not promoted too much to potential visitors to South Korea. It’s got a stunning landscape during summer but winter brings a whole new experience. One of the places you just have to visit is Yongpyong Resort, with its 28 ski slopes.
It gets 2 and a half meters of snow each winter and that’s what makes this resort the perfect place to hold a Winter Olympics, which is what’s going to happen in February 2018. The resort itself is set on over 17 million square meters and it’s got a venue for every type of winter sport you could ever think of. It’s even got a 45-hole golf course!
The resort includes state-of-the-art facilities, which have been built in the past few years such as the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, the Cross-Country Ski Centre, incredible ski jumping facilities, a ski park and the Yongpyong Alpine Centre. It’s also got some amazing restaurants and great bars and shopping. All of these things make it a Korean ski mecca in wintertime.
An absolute must for first time visitors is taking a gondola ride to get a birds eye view of the resort. 1,453 meters above sea level and nestled in the Baekdudaegan Garden Mountain Range, you will next reach Dragons Peak – the place for serious ski lovers.
Dragon Peak is very spectacular and if you’re not sure about taking the 1.6km run from the top of the mountain, you can start off with one of the other 27 runs. They all have different skill levels.
Like any destination in the northern hemisphere, it really does get cold here so be sure to rug up. Minus 14 is a fairly warm day but the great thing is the ski gear is available here to hire and you can either shop till you drop or rent your ski outfit.
This place is brilliant for the winter sports enthusiasts. The Koreans have something of a hidden gem here that ski fanatics are only just discovering, something that will be much more prominent when the Winter Games are broadcasted internationally.
