Excursion to The Great Wall of China
Story Title: Excursion to The Great Wall of China
Episode: 1
TX Date: February 9th, 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
The 13,000 miles of walls, towers and trenches had begun 2,200 years ago to defend the Chinese empire against nomads from the north. Once a divider of nations, today it brings curious travellers together.
- Viking Orion guests are driven to explore a colourful part of the great wall – Huangyaguan a.k.a. Yellow Cliff Pass, fittingly named after the golden coloured plant life which clings to the cliffs. This shore excursion is included in the cruise fare for all guests.
- This portion of the wall was built more than 1,400 years ago by the Northern Qi Dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty, it was reinforced with brick and in 1984 restoration brought new life to this two–mile stretch and several watchtowers.
- During your visit, you will have the chance to hike up and down the wall as it snakes over an abrupt mountain ridge.
