Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan
Thailand is a country of deeply spiritual people, predominantly of Buddhist faith. Buddhism first came to Thailand about 2,000 years ago and there are some amazing temples across the country. But in the south, the largest is the Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan – a temple well worth seeing, about 2 hours from Krabi.
The temple, built 800 years ago, is an amazing place to visit to experience the peace and serenity of the Buddhist teachings. The temple’s architecture is incredible and the major feature is the 149 stupas with the main stupor gilded in pure gold, standing some 55m above ground level.
Maintaining a magnificent temple like this is expensive. And s0 the monks bless those who visit and partake in goodwill gestures, such as paying to add gold leaf guilds to the many statues you will find around the temple. A simple donation and gesture such as this will bring good karma to the generous spirited visitor.
At the base of the main stupa, there is something significant to the local people. You see, in here is a relic that was sent over here over 800 years ago when they started to build this. And very deep, in the heart of this, it is said to be a part of Buddha – a tooth, buried deep here. This, and all the good work the Buddhists do in the local community, makes this temple an important part of Southern Thailand.
Inside the temple, there are many things you can do to bring good luck. Placing a coin in the hundred bowls is said to bring good karma and health to the family. Praying to the one hundred Buddhas is said to bring good luck and prosperity to the visitors of the temple.
One magnificent structure dedicated to the Buddha’s life and enlightenment is the Royal Pavilion. The path to enlightenment begins here for many monks and they meditate beneath the giant Buddha statue.
Tip: Don’t forget to pack long pants for visits to the temple, especially for women.
