Paddle Wanaka
Episode: 1
Title: Paddle Wanaka
Broadcast: Oct 30 2016
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane & Chrissy Morrissy
Wanaka is the fourth biggest lake in all of New Zealand. And whilst it can be incredibly peaceful, there are also many activities you can do, from fishing to paddling, or even jet boating. Chrissy Morrissy and Trevor Cochrane take a guided tour of Lake Wanaka via paddleboat.
Wanaka is a pretty part of the world, and long before the ski fields were opened up and the jet boats and the chopper tours, the people gravitated here to relax, fish and swim in this beautiful lake.
Kayaking is the perfect way to get out and experience this huge expanse of water. The guided paddle we are taking takes about 3 hours.
There is no need for a drink bottle on this adventure – the water is so clean you can just lean over and take a scoop! The lake was formed by glaciers and at its deepest point it’s 330m. And no, the water never actually freezes over, even though we are in the middle of some of the best snowfields in the country. This water is full of salmon and trout!
