Montgomery Reef

Story: Montgomery Reef
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Broadcast Date: 21 June 2025

Trevor and guests experience this remarkable natural phenomenon, as Montgomery reef rises out of the ocean right before our eyes!

  • After sailing overnight from Broome, the Reef Prince arrives at Montgomery Reef, one of the Kimberley’s most extraordinary natural landmarks, located in Camden Sound, around 330km north of Broome.
  • Covering over 400 square kilometres, Montgomery Reef isn’t formed by coral but by a 1.8-billion-year-old rock base—making it one of the most unique reef systems on the planet.
  • With tides rising and falling by up to 12 metres—the second largest in the world—the reef emerges dramatically at low tide, standing up to 4 metres above sea level. At high tide, it disappears completely beneath the water’s surface.
  • As water rushes off the reef, it creates miniature waterfalls and channels that attract sea turtles, reef sharks, rays, and an abundance of marine life—making this a hotspot for nature lovers and photographers.
  • Described as a “bucket list” experience, Montgomery Reef feels like an ancient, living garden. Coral clings to its rock base, and the surrounding ecosystem remains pristine thanks to its protected Green Zone status.
  • Guides like Ben Moore describe the reef as “breathtaking” and “humbling,” offering guests a rare and powerful reminder of both the strength and fragility of our natural world.
