King Cascades
Story: King Cascades
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Broadcast Date: 21 June 2025
Trevor explores the King Cascades waterfall from below, above and onboard the reef prince.
- Flowing for 106 kilometres through a fault line known as the Prince Regent Lineament, the Prince Regent River is a geological marvel, carving its way between sheer 50-metre-high cliffs from the Caroline Range to the sea.
- The riverbanks are home to rare wildlife like the black grass wren, endemic to the Kimberley, and feature ancient Indigenous rock art sites that offer insight into the region’s deep cultural significance.
- One of the highlights of the journey, King Cascades is a dramatic waterfall that plunges 50 metres down the cliffs. Guests can approach by tender boat, stand at the base, and hike to the top for sweeping views and an unforgettable experience.
- After a rope-assisted climb, guests are rewarded with a swim in a secluded natural waterhole, complete with cascading mini waterfalls and rocky plunge pools—perfect for cooling off after the hike.
- The top of the falls reveals a completely different ecosystem, with pandanus and weeping paperbarks growing beside cool, crystal-clear water—an oasis high above the Kimberley floor.
- Thanks to Reef Prince’s shallow draft, the vessel can anchor directly beneath the King Cascades, where guests are treated to a ‘Kimberley shower’—a one-of-a-kind experience under a roaring tropical waterfall.
