Tagish Lake is a great place to view the Northern Lights, with the Southern Lakes Resort being the best place to base yourself while in the area.
- Lying within the traditional territory of the Carcross / Tagish First Nation People, the Southern Lakes Resort is nothing short of exceptional.
- Each morning, you’ll be able to spot something new from your traditional log cabin – it could be a different light, or even a beaver down by the lake.
- There are dog mushers right next door to the hotel. Dog mushing is big in this area, and veteran long-distance musher Michelle Phillips offers an authentic winter experience that can’t be missed.
- When there isn’t enough snow for sledding, dogs are kept active by being attached to a buggy, making sure they can handle the harsh winter conditions.
- Dog mushing involves hooking dogs to a sled and having them pull you along. This has been used as a form of transportation for many years, with dogs able to take you both long and short distances.
- Michelle became interested in dog mushing when she met her partner, Ed. She was a musher, and she quickly became fascinated with the sport, impressed by the dogs athleticism and loving the adventurous lifestyle.
- Michelle and Ed offer a number of different experiences, giving guests an opportunity to see dogs in action, and to interact with them. They are able ride in a sled, or even drive their own team – all whilst enjoying the peaceful scenery.
- The main event at Tagish Lake happens when the sun goes down and the incomparable Aurora Borealis fills the night sky.
- There are a view Northern Lights viewing options at the Southern Lakes Resort – you could stay in the warmth of your cabin, or head out to the viewing sight, where you can sit around a fire enjoying a hot beverage.
