City Views of Dublin

Segment: City Views of Dublin
Episode: Viking Ep 6 – British Isles Explorer
Air Date: 24th November 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Viking offers at least one complementary shore excursion in each port, and their tour of Dublin will help you get a real lay of the land.

  • The tour starts in one of the city’s most important landmarks – Custom House. Originally built on the banks of the River Liffey in 1791, the building was completely rebuilt after the IRA burnt it down in the 1920s.
  • The tidal River Liffey is said to be the source of the water that makes the Irish stout Guinness – although you’ll be questioning that once the tide goes down and you see what’s on the bottom.
  • St Patrick’s Cathedral is a stunning piece of architecture, and is where U2’s Bono learnt to sing.
  • Built in 1592, the famous Trinity College was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth 1st. The grounds are well worth visiting, and the library home to the Book of Kells.
  • The traditional doors of the homes in the city are painted vibrant colours. This was to stop drunk Irishman from going home to the wrong house.
  • The tour takes you to Phoenix Park, the largest municipal park in the centre of a city in Europe. The incredibly beautiful Bloom Garden Show is held here annually each June, and attracts the best of Europe and Ireland’s gardeners.
  • This style of excursion provides guests with an excellent overview of their destination and its highlights, giving then the information they need to spend the rest of their stay exploring deeper.
