Traditional Mozambique Experience

The African country of Mozambique has a long and fascinating history, full of interesting sights, smells and tastes.

  • Just south of the town of Vilanculos lies Chebuene, a trading settlement that was occupied during two distinct phases – the first dating back to the late first millennium AD, and the second to around 1450. The trade goods found here, included glass beads and ceramics, indicate that Southern Mozambique was once part of the Indian Ocean trade network.
  • The old ceramic pots were made by locals from Vilanculos. As they were made from a very resistant material and have been preserved for 500 years, they tell a lot about the region’s past.
  • The nearby markets are a much more modern trading hub. You’ll be able to find a huge variety of products here, including some very colourful traditional clothing. Capulana is a kind of sarong, and is a huge part of the Mozambique history. Women in particular use it as a kind of dress, though you can use it for almost anything.
  • The market has a huge range, with vegetables, souvenirs, electronics and much more on offer. It is a great place for the locals to hang out, catch up with friends and watch the world go by.
  • Local village life is a community affair, with families living in several huts on one plot of land. Being a fishing village, most of the family is out hauling in the next catch, while those left keep the home fires burning.
