Sukhothai Historical Park
Sukhothai Historical Park
If you love Thai history then this one place you have to come to – Sukhothai. This was the first kingdom in Thailand, built about 1800 years ago. It’s a truly remarkable place, spread over 70 square kilometres.
Imagining what the historical park would have been like when they first built it is amazing. The people around the sides would have seen this huge monument built with Kings, Queens and royalty buried nearby. Each one of the bricks and pavers have been handmade, you can even see where the owners cats or dogs have stepped into the drying brick! This park truly is something to behold.
These days the park is maintained by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand with the help from UNESCO, who declared it a World Heritage Site.
What many believe to be the most beautiful of all monuments, which holds a very special journey is Wat Sa Si. For a Buddhist to achieve enlightenment they have to cross a bridge over water, and Wat Sa Si is very special and well-worth crossing over.
Sukhothai literally means “Dawn of Happiness” and when you visit you can see how content the Buddha’s are. They all have a massive sense of happiness about them.
Although there are so many different things you will learn while in Sukhothai, learning the stories of these Buddha’s is truly inspiring.
