Thinking Person’s Cruise #2
Segment: Thinking Person’s Cruise #2
Episode: Into the Midnight Sun Ep 3
Air Date: 27th October 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Viking has thought long and hard about the experience they want to give their guests, and their ships feature a number of incredible artworks.
- There are no children or casinos on-board Viking Cruises; instead, they’re full of entertainment and intellectual stimulation.
- Viking aims to teach guests about the places they visit, with the things you see and do being a result of the company’s heritage. Guests have a unique opportunity to learn about Norwegian culture.
- The ob-board art collection features many Norwegian artists, both renowned and up and coming, covering a diverse spectrum from digital to print, oil paintings, photography and sculpture.
- To help guests experience the art on-board, the Viking Art Guide app offers a self-guided art tour. This gives guests the opportunity to explore the ship before departing, and to hear behind-the-scenes stories of the Scandinavian spaces and pieces.
- Markus Brendmoe is a Norwegian artist who works with paint, pencil and graphic design. His work can be characterised as a mixture of cartoon and graffiti.
- One of the most famous artists featured on-board is Edvard Munch. The Viking Sea hosts 8 pieces of his original work, with 35 pieces being scattered across the Viking fleet – the largest collection outside of the Oslo museum.
- Munch was a deeply troubled, yet enormously gifted artist. He and his family were plagued by illness, insanity and death, and the tour shows how many of his pieces were inspired by madness and his paranoia of death.
- At 6pm, the Living Room hosts a special viewing of Munch Moments. Through an exclusive partnership with Oslo Museum, Viking has the digital rights to all of Munch’s pieces, and they are shown on a high-quality screen.
