Lin Family Gardens
Just 20 minutes from Taipei, is the Lin Family Gardens which showcases early Chinese architecture and garden styles.
In 1778, Lin Ying-yin, the forefather of the Lin family, came to Taiwan from Lungshi in Chang-chou prefecture, Fujian Province. His son was a trader and was very wealthy and influential in the Taiwanese community. The Lin family constructed a residential mansion on the upper reaches of the Tamshui River, at Dakekan, now Dashi in Taoyuan.
The Lin family house was designed on a grand scale and was carefully constructed with incredible attention to detail. All the building materials were bought from China. The craftsmanship found in this house is both elegant and delicate and displays abundant examples of brilliant decorative skills.
The design of the garden follows the Feng Shui principles so when you leave the garden you feel a sense of great wellbeing. The buildings follow traditional Chinese architecture such as Ming Dynasty tiling.
The garden is broken into different rooms which once allowed for privacy for the families. The moon gates lead from one side of the garden to the other and are a typical feature in Chinese gardens. It is a symbolic welcoming entrance for only the wealthiest Chinese.
The Lin Family gardens have been the backdrop for many Chinese movies and it’s not uncommon to see film shoots, plays and dramas at the garden.
The garden is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike and is open from 9am-5pm each day.
