Seafood Market
Seafood Market
Korea has an incredibly diverse array of foods but its seafood is among the best in the world. With a huge coastline that wraps right around the peninsula, you’ve got to expect to see some amazing produce. The best place to see it? Fisherman’s Market.
Founded in 1936, Jumunjin Seafood Market is in Gengneung on the edge of the Jumunjin Port. The produce comes straight from the boat to the market - you can’t get fresher seafood. It’s the largest seafood market on the east coast of Korea and an absolutely fascinating place to explore.
There’s an incredible diversity of species and plenty of husband and wife teams working together to deliver the freshest seafood to visitors. It’s okay if you can’t cook Korean food, buy some seafood from the market and you can take it to a local restaurant where the chefs will cook it for you. A brilliant idea.
All the seafood comes from the carefully managed east sea, which allows for a sustainable industry and means fresh and local fish for visitors to the market. Lining the docks opposite the market are fishing boats with glass lanterns used to attract squid at nighttime. It’s incredible to watch the fishermen bringing in the huge green nets and preparing their produce for the market.
Visiting the markets is a lot of fun and a great insight into Korean culture.
