Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones
Filled with magnificent and stunning landscapes, Northern Ireland is host to many stunning areas of natural beauty.
Only an hour from Belfast and at the foot of the Mourne Mountains is 630 hectares of the haunting and romantic Tullymore Forest. This deep green woodland is a haven for explorers, with the Shimna River running all through the forest. With 16 bridges dating all the way back to 1726, the natural history of this forest sets it apart from the rest. The Oak trees that stood before the Pine trees also provided the wood for the inside of the Titanic.
Providing a real sense of eeriness to visitors is the filming of the popular television series Game of Thrones and after a visit to this enchanting world, it’s not hard to see why this forest was chosen as the main setting of the series.
Castleward or the now better-known Winterfell Castle is known as the home to the Stark family of this series. Inside the sprawling medieval walls and imposing castle tower gate, which was built in 1583 and featured in many episodes, is the infamous archway where the King greeted the Stark family. During filming the estate can hold a mind-blowing 1,000 people and 2,000 horses.
You will recognise many parts of the set in every direction you turn during your visit, with many different tour options for people of all ages including an explore of the set, behind the scene cast revelations and even a dress-up option to create your very own scenes.
