Coffee and Cake
- The Black Forest is an area in Southwest Germany that got it's name many centuries ago from how thick and wooded it use to be with fir and pine trees.
- The Black forest region is known for its abundant and beautiful cherry trees, which were said to be an inspiration for the black forest cake.
- It is also famous for its cuckoo clocks, dark chocolate, Morello cherries, and Kirsch, the double-distilled clear alcohol they produce from the cherries
- The Black Forest Cake’s popularity started in southern Germany after 1930 and then spread to the rest of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
- The history of black forest cake has many versions, but perhaps the most popular version is that confectioner Josef Keller invented the black forest cake, or as he called it, the black forest cherry in 1915 in his café Agner in Bad Godesberg.
- In German Black Forest Cake is called Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, literally Black Forest ‘Cherry Tart’.
- A traditional Black Forest Cake consists of cream, dark sponge cake layers, chocolate shavings, cherries and the famous Black Forest cherry brandy.
- Black Forest cake is world famous and the original German Black Forest Cake recipe or similar versions can be found in many countries.
