Episode: 1 Explore Canada: Grizzly Bears
Title: Traveling to Great Bear Lodge
Broadcast: December 10th 2017
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane & Nigel Ruck
Trevor Cochrane and Nigel Ruck journey north of British Columbia, Canada to Great Bear Lodge, situated in the Great Bear Rainforest. The rainforest is home to a significant concentration of coastal grizzly bears. During the late summer and early autumn bears are drawn to the many salmon spawning streams feeding into the coastal inlets.
- While the local bear population reaches its peak in the autumn, during the spring and summer bears feed on sedges, succulents and grasses that make up the dense bio- mass of the river estuary. Great Bear Lodge offers accommodation and guided tours in the area.
- Nigel & Trevor begin their journey by flying from Vancouver to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, this is the first of two flights to the lodge. After landing in Port Hardy, Nigel & Trevor board a 1944 Gurman Goose float plane for a one hour flight to Great Bear lodge.
- The eco lodge was set up in 2004 as a base to explore its wildlife surrounds, offering wilderness-gourmet meals and hot showers. The floating lodge hosts accommodation for up to 16 people.
- During the 6 months the Lodge is open, visitors can expect to see between 40-60 bears in the wild, as well as many other species of wildlife.
