County Donegal

Story: County Donegal
Episode: 9
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 11th March 2023

Trevor ventures to Malin Head Viewpoint to explore its scenic vistas.

  • At the Inishowen Peninsula, the Star Wars cast and crew filmed at Hell's Hole, a ravine carved into the surrounding rocks by wild Atlantic waves.
  • Malin Head Viewpoint, the northernmost point of Ireland, offers great scenic beauty and has historical, scientific and ecological significance.
  • Inishtrahull Island, visible to the east, was once a thriving fishing community, but the islanders were eventually compelled to evacuate in the early 1900s due to a combination of factors.
  • Bren will discuss the island as it cannot be visited. Banba's Crown, located on the northernmost tip of Malin Head, features a 1805 clifftop tower built by the British Admiralty, as well as concrete huts used by the Irish army during WWII.
  • A path from the fort-side car park leads 700m to Hell's Hole, a chasm where the incoming waters crash against rock formations.
  • In Irish mythology, the Tuatha De Danann were skilled deities and heroes associated with places such as the ancient Grianán of Aileach, a stone fort still standing on a hilltop in Inishowen.
  • The Eire 80 sign, a recently restored navigational marker, was used in WWII to alert aircraft to neutral Ireland.
