One of Switzerland's underrated tourist destinations, Basel has a beautiful medieval old town center, a vibrant Carnival, and several world-class art museums.

A City of many Faces

• Basel is in northwest Switzerland, at the point where the Rhine bends northwards.
• Located where the Swiss, French and German borders meet it also has suburbs in France and Germany.
• The city developed from a Roman military camp built in connection with the Roman colony of Augusta Raurica.
• Historic landmarks of the city include the large market square with its richly decorated red sandstone town hall and the late Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, Heinrich Munster Cathedral.
• Basel is among the most important cultural centres of Switzerland. The city comprises a large number of theatres and many museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the world's oldest art collection accessible to the public.
• Basel is home to the largest orchestra in Switzerland, the Sinfonieorchester Basel. It is also the home of the Kammerorchester Basel, which is recording the complete symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven.
• The most visited tourist attraction in Basel and the second most visited tourist attraction in Switzerland is Zoo Basel, with over 1.7 million visitors per year.
• Basel is a green city and the Botanical Gardens, several parks and the banks of the Rhine are perfect places to relax and linger for a while.
