Episode: Thailand Part 2
Date: 22nd February
Story: Elephant Nature Park and Raft making in Chiang Mai
Presenter: Nigel Ruck and Geraldine Chia
Nigel and Geraldine visited the Elephant Nature Park to see how so many volunteers are doing their bit to protect the animal that is a symbol of the nation. They later made a bamboo raft and set sail down the river.
- Elephants are an important part of Thai culture. They are a symbol of royal power, a feature of Buddhist art and architecture, and a spiritual mentor for many people.
- The Elephant Nature Park is located 60km from Chiang Mai and provides a sanctuary for distressed elephants from all over Thailand. The park cares for over 30 elephants.
- The park was founded by a local resident, Sangduen Chailert (Lek), in the 1990s. She developed a love for elephants when she was a child, after her own family took in an elephant to care and nurture.
- The herd includes disabled, orphaned, blind and rescued elephants of all ages. They are kept in a peaceful natural environment under the dedicated care of the workers.
- Nigel enjoyed bathing one of the elephants, something that all visitors can do. You can also help to prepare their food.
- Imaginative Traveller runs a volunteer programme where visitors can take part in a week-long stay. Volunteers will bathe and feed the elephants and may do others tasks such as cut grass for food, repair fences or collect data.?
- After a memorable morning at the Elephant Nature Park, Nigel and Geraldine headed to the river to make a bamboo raft, under guidance from a local expert of course.
- Bamboo Rafting is one of Northern Thailand?s most popular activities. It is a great way to take in the natural beauty of the area.
- After assembling their raft, Nigel and Geraldine took a leisurely sail down the river. A perfect way to end the day.
