Panoramic Lofoten

Segment: Panoramic Lofoten
Episode: Into the Midnight Sun Ep 2
Air Date: 20 October 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

The Lofoten Islands are draped across the waters of the Norwegian Sea, offering a landscape of majestic mountains, deep fjords and long, surf swept beaches.

  • The Lofoten Islands are known for excellent fishing and natural attractions such as the Northern Lights. Viking offers shore excursions to explore the area at no added cost.
  • Located in the Nordland county, the charmingly picturesque Ballstad is one of the largest fishing villages in Lofoten.
  • Tour guide Craig Colley is a Ten-Pound-Pom, who eventually left Perth to escape the heat. He came to the Lofoten Islands and fell in love with them – and also fell in love with a French girl living there.
  • Nestled in a u-shaped valley, the tiny village of Unstad wasn’t connected with the road system as recently as the 1980s – it was isolated enough to create its own dialect.
  • Haukland Beach is one of Lofoten’s most famous beaches, with Caribbean-like waters, mountainous landscapes in the background and beautiful white sand. It is considered to be Lofoten’s best swimming beach – although waters never rise about 15 degrees.
  • Uttakleiv Beach perhaps Norways most photographed beach, attracting explorers seeking the Northern Lights and midnight sun. The mixture of rocks and sand, the view towards the mountains and the open ocean make this a popular destination for photographers.
  • With such pristine scenery, you’ll want to make sure you pack a camera.
