Segment: Oxford Walking Tour
Episode: Viking Ep – British Isles Explorer
Air Date: 8th December 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

For centuries the University and town of Oxford have been considered a beacon of learning, imagination, and creativity. Viking offers its guests the possibility to take this tour as part of the Viking experience and it's a chance to learn so much.

  • The destinations on this journey are historic much like the town, which started as a small Saxon village nearly 2000 years ago and then evolved into one of the most influential centres of learning on the planet.
  • Tour Guide Jamie Graham explains the history of the Sheldonian Theatre and the reasons behind its particular architecture.
  • During this walking tour you also get to see some historical social destinations like the King’s Arm Pub, the oldest in town, opened in 1603 and named after King James the 1st.
  • Just down the road, the Turf Tavern is a popular but well-hidden historic pub whose foundations and use as a malt house and drinking tavern date back to 1381. It’s actually built on the edge of the ancient city wall.
  • The next stop is the famous Trinity College, one of Oxford’s 38 colleges, founded by Thomas Pope in 1555.
