Sir Edward Dunlop

Title: Explore Thailand 2017
Story: Sir Edward Dunlop
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

The journey continues another museum, this one dedicated to Sir Edward Weary Dunlop. Colonel Dunlop was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership whilst being held prisoner by the Japanese during WWII.

  • Dunlop's dedication and heroism became a legend amongst prisoners. He worked hard to maintain morale in those terrible prison camps and jungle hospitals.
  • Weary Dunlop became, in the words of one of his own men, a "lighthouse of sanity in a universe of madness and suffering".
  • Many Australian's have come here to participate in ANZAC day commemorations including His Excellency Paul Robilliard
  • This is a great place to come because you appreciate the courage and sacrifice of people like Weary Dunlop and all of those Australian's who worked on the Railway, there were 13,000 who had to work on the Railway, and nearly 3,000 of them died.
  • Weary Dunlop made a tremendous name for himself because a great sacrifice for himself, his own health, his own welfare and a man who dedicated his life to others.
  • For all Australians if you have the opportunity to be in Thailand on ANZAC day, come to Hellfire Pass and really experience something that will make you proud to be Australian and also make you proud to think of Australian's in the past who have really made the ultimate sacrifice.
