Wat Rong Khun
Wat Rong Khun
Thailand has no shortage of temples and some say if you’ve seen one – you’ve seen them all, but 13-kilometers out of Chiang Rai is a site for sore eyes. This temple is known as The White Temple. It’s an intricate masterpiece, which was bought in 1997 by a local artist.
What the artist has created with his own money is simply remarkable. He had a specific vision – he wanted every detail of the temple to carry deep religious symbolism.
To reach the main temple hall, you have to cross a bridge surrounded by hundreds of hands coming from the ground. This is to depict the cycle of death and rebirth. Over the bridge you’re walking through the gates of heaven, which can be referred to as escaping desire, greed and passion, moving towards the sublime.
The inside of the temple is covered with pop culture murals, depicting traditional motifs. This truly is unique and proves that superheros don’t exist in real life and to save us – we need to find peace in ourselves.
The design of the temple symbolises the teachings of Buddha to rise to a state of enlightenment. The intricacy of the temple is amazing and something you just have to see for yourself.
