Tropical Flora

Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

  • Khao Sok is home to an amazingly diverse ecosystem that's hundreds of millions of years old, with the modern forest a relic of ancient Siam.
  • The first dicotyledon trees on the planet following the coniferous period where dipterocarps.
  • The under canopy below the tree canopy is alive with shade loving plants like bamboos, palms, strangler figs, ferns, epiphytes, orchids, carnivorous pitcher plants and climbing plants such as pepper and liana vines.
  • Ferns, lichens and mosses all fight for the remaining one % of light which reached the forest floor.
Due to the canopy absorbing around 99% of all light available to the forest the plants understory and ground level create dense dark leaves some reaching huge sizes and packed with chlorophyll in order to catch as much energy from the sun as possible.
