The Explore crew sail past Porto, and one of the most intricate architectural marvels in history.

  • The Douro is Portugal’s third longest river at 917km long and was named the river of gold by the romans who came here 2000 years ago. Viking cruise 210km of this magnificent UNESCO world heritage listed region allowing guests to enjoy one of the world’s most famous wine regions.
  • The city of Porto, Portugal’s second largest city sits at the mouth of Douro river on the edge of the Atlanta ocean, it is beautiful, and connected by some incredible bridges. like the Luis the first bridge
  • Designed, engineered and built by a Frenchman, Gustav Eiffel in 1886, who went on to build another incredible structure Paris’ Eiffel tower just a year later.
  • Standing high above the Douro River on the Gaiai side of the river is the Serra do Pilar monastery which was inaugurated in 1672 and has gazed down at the river of gold and surrounding landscape in its present form for over 350 years.
