Newman Attractions
A popular destination for a day’s outing is Kalgan’s Pool, a 1.5 hour drive from Newman. The deep pool has an exquisite blue colour almost all year round. An immense cliff face surrounds the pool and the best way to describe it is a tranquil oasis perfectly set amidst the rusty, red desert landscape, a great spot for camping, swimming and picnics. Access to Kalgan’s Pool is via four wheel drive only and you will need to get a permit from the Newman Visitors Centre to access the road in. The beauty of Kalgan’s Pool has captured the focus of Hollywood, being the set for Japanese Story, which starred Australia’s own Toni Collette.
The horse racing tradition in Newman is one that goes back over 100 years and every year, a number of races are celebrated at the town’s main track. Locals take their horse racing very seriously, with enthusiasts making their way down traveling as far as 100 kilometers to be a part of the fun and excitement. Other races include the Newman Outback Drags, held every year in August, which is also the best time of the year to come down and be part of the festivities.
Temperatures can get hot in the Pilbara so a refreshing dip in Opthalmia Dam is a good way to cool off. The Dam gets its name from the nearby Opthalmia Ranges and the water in the Dam serves as the water supply for Newman. The 13 square kilometer body of fresh water was formed when a branch of the Fortesque River was damned. Located just 16 kilometres north east of Newman, this is a popular swimming and recreation spot, especially on the weekends. An array of wildlife and birds can be spotted here so be sure to bring a pair of binoculars. However, the most spectacular sight at Opthalmia Dam is the beautiful sunsets which create magnificent reflections on the Dam for all to enjoy.
