Cable Car, Zealandia
Cable Car, Zealandia
You don’t have to travel far from the city centre to experience great things in Wellington. One example is the 110-year-old cable car, which takes you from the heart of the city to the top of the entrance of the Botanical Garden and the perfect viewing platform of the city.
These cable cars are a terrific way to get up into an elevated position and take a good look back over the beautiful landscape of Wellington. If you are interested in the development of the cable car, you can check out the Cable Car Museum, which tells the history and origins of the cars from over a century ago. Whilst you’re here, make sure you check out the beautiful Botanical Gardens right next door.
The gardens are home to a number of pathways, which wind gently along the hillside. Each one is around a 20-minute walk before you reach the bottom and are back in the city. A visit to the gardens is a great chance to wind down and experience the real beauty of this location.
Catch the free shuttle bus from the Botanical Gardens for a five-minute drive to Zealandia. Only 10 minutes from central Wellington, this nature lover’s paradise is home to some of New Zealand’s rarest flora and fauna. The whole story started 80 million years ago when two fragments of land broke away from super-continent Gondwana, which created the perfect isolation for evolutionary development. You wont find any other plants or animals on the planet like the ones you will find here. Today, the 225-hectare sanctuary is the perfect place to stroll and take in the sites.
Careful conservation programs have been developed to keep the population of certain species up and to see them thriving at Zealandia is simply amazing. The conservation plan of the park is on a 12-month budget, on a 5-year business plan and 500-year conservation plan. This means we can continue to preserve this pristine environment for many, many years to come.
Being the world’s first fully fenced eco-sanctuary, this is the perfect place for bird lovers and animal lovers alike. Zealandia offer a Walk and Talk Tour, which gives you the ability to walk through the place with a guide and there’s also a night tour where you experience the noises of the night. You may even see a Kiwi!
