Boasting the longest section of Indian Ocean coastline in Africa, Mozambique is home to a huge selection of wildlife.

  • South of Maputo lies Anvil Bay, an eco-luxury resort with stunning rooms nestled in the forest. Just a few steps away from the beach, canvas tents provide shelter and are an excellent place to dine while overlooking the incredible views.
  • Nearby Anvil Bay you can find the Maputo Special Reserve. This reserve features a huge host of animals, including elephants, hippos, zebras and antelopes. Mabeco Tours offer safaris in the reserve, with the tour drivers making sure to keep a safe distance from the animals, respecting their comfort zones.
  • There has been no elephant poaching in the reserve in 5 years, with roughly 450 elephants wandering the area. Elephants are unpredictable animals, travelling in herds. They are also very protective animals, mock charging when they get agitated – they can run at around 35 km/hour and can reach up to 6 tonnes in weight.
  • Mozambique’s most important heritage is its natural reserves, such as its wild animals, trees and grasses.
  • Hippos are territorial animals, and can be quite aggressive, especially during the dry season when the water bodies are reduced. While many people think they can swim, this is actually not the case – they hold their breath for around 5 minutes and walk under the water.
  • No virgin forest was cut during the construction of the eco-lodge. 32 people are employed there, with most of them being from the local areas. Anvil Bay is a dream destination for animal lovers, offering the opportunity to get away from it all while keeping the comforts of home.
