Mozambique features a truly pristine water environment, and there is a huge amount of water-based activities you can get up to.

  • 766km north of Maputo lies the coastal town of Vilankulos. It is here you will find the Bazaruto Archipelago, home to an amazing water environment, rich in species such as sea turtles and dugongs.
  • Odyssea Dive and Big Blue Vilankulos offer diving tours of the spectacular marine environment. In between the two large islands of the area, Benguerra and Bazaruto, lies the 2 Mile Reef. If you’re interested in diving, this reef offers a truly incredible experience.
  • 21 metres down you can find around 2000 species of fish. The landscape is surreal, with a sandy bottom with rocky outcrops, and the display of tropical fish gets more brilliantly coloured the further out you swim.
  • While there are many small fish around the reef, you can also find some absolutely huge ones, such as the gigantic cod fish. These large fish have much smaller cleaner fish swimming through their mouth and over their bodies, cleaning up any parasites.
  • While it may look like a plant, the sea anemone is actually an animal. Their tentacles have stings in them, containing a neurotoxin that allows any prey caught in them to be eaten alive.
  • There are 7 species of ocean turtle surviving on Earth, with 5 of them being found around the Archipelago, such as the rare loggerhead turtle and the green turtle. Turtles love snoozing in caves and under ledges, and are actually air breathers, able to hold their breath for up to 5 hours.
