Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
When it comes to wellness, few things will leave you feeling as relaxed and grounded as walking through a beautiful garden. The Spirited Garden, located on South Koreas Jeju Island, is a testament to one man’s vision, hosting hundreds of beautiful bonsai trees, as well as strikingly crafted stone walls and towers stacked with Jeju volcanic stones.
- Having bought some wasteland in 1968, Mr Bum-Young Sung has dedicated his life to cultivating a truly astounding garden. He has a love for trees, especially those that can last hundreds of years. Known as bunjae in Korean, you might know them by their Japanese name – bonsai.
- This garden has one of the world’s finest collections of these plants, with some of the most spectacular landscaping you could hope to see. This is mostly down to the hard work of Bum-Young Sung.
- The charm of bonsai can be found in its pruning and forms created. When some roots are cut off at regular intervals, the bonsai becomes a new plant with new roots, but maintains its beauty and health.
- Despite many health and financial difficulties, Bum-Young Sung has persevered, with his belief in God keeping him strong. The garden itself is dedicated to God, and also to those who love trees.
