Jeonju Royal Cuisine
Jeonju Royal Cuisine
The guys have been eating like kings so far on this trip but now it’s going to be official. Trev and Scott are going to eat exactly like King’s as they go to try some raw cuisine.
Known as Gung Hanjeongsik or palace food, this vast banquet happens once a month, specifically for the royals. Each of the eight provinces would send their best produce to the palace to be prepared and presented to the King.
A quick lesson from the award winning chef and owner of the Gung Restaurant is a must to learn how to tackle this feast in its traditional way.
The abalone is from one of Trev’s favourite places in Korea, Jeju Island. The pickled radish absolutely blows Scott away because of the gorgeous colour on it.
The orientation of the table is completely traditional with a big table that is higher than the smaller table, a rectangular table off to one side and specific dishes to each table is all very interesting. It’s almost theatre with food and there’s so much to learn here.
This wonderful spread is more than just a meal. The colours and textures are designed to represent the cultural, political and artistic diversity of Korean people. The amount of work and preparation that has gone into this and the quality of the produce is just unbelievable.
10-minutes out of the ancient capital Jeonju, you will find the wonderful and traditional Honok Village
Not many Koreans would be able to experience a feast like this, it’s a very special moment and Trev puts it as number one on his list of things to do when visiting Korea.
