Jeju Island

Jeju Island

Jeju Island, located southwest of the Korean peninsula, is a volcanic island in the shape of an oval, measuring 73km from west to eat and 31km from north to south. The weather is warm here, even in winter. The island of Jeju is full of breathtaking sights and unusual attractions.

One place you must visit is the Soesokkak Estuary. A popular destination for both tourists and locals, it is a short drive from Jeju city.

Soesokkak Estuary is lined with cliffs of lava formations, overhung with pine trees. The water takes on the deep blue of the ocean and the scenery is amazing. A great way to begin an adventure in Jeju is right here…with an oar and a kayak. What a great way to enjoy this beautiful place – and at your own pace. You can also view scenery that you can’t otherwise. You can try kayaking here or water biking.

Jeju’s Soesokkak estuary on the southern side is truly remarkable. For centuries, small, flat wooden boats called Teu were used to ferry people and livestock across the estuary. The boat is pulled across the estuary by a long rope that is strung between the two banks. Taking a ride on a teu across the clear water is a great way to enjoy the scenery.

There’s so much to do in Jeju even on a rainy day. There are museums – highest concentration of speciality museums anywhere in the world place here in Jeju. You may want to try visiting the specialty museums or visit the Manjang Caves like Trevor.

Located about 30km east of Jeju City, the Cave has one of Earth’s finest and largest lava tubes.
Lava tubes are formed when lava deep in the ground is pushed up and spurts out the peak, flowing over the surface forming the tube. The cave has a variety of interesting structures inside, including 70cm lava stalagmites and the lava tube tunnels. The lava tube is 23m in breadth and 30m in height, and stretches as far as 7400m. Its length ranks amongst the top 15 in the world.

In Jeju, the food is delicious and one dish you need to try is grilled black pork – finest pork in the world. The pork is cut in bite sized pieced and grilled. Grab a sesame leaf, and pile on kimchi, radish and pork – and oh, it’s just amazing.

A great treat after a delicious meal like Jeju’s grilled black pork are treats made of the local citrus – a tangerine with an amazing fresh scent. Juices, ice cream and other treats are made with the local tangerine, which has a unique, citrusy flavour. Make sure you try the crisp and chocolate treats.
