We visit Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, where whale sharks and manta rays swim with ease in a huge, world-class 8.2m tank. You’ll also get to see the habitat of exotic tropical fish in the tank, which reproduces the environment of coral reefs living 20m below the water's surface.

Under the Sea!

• Okinawa's wealth of nature, history and culture can be experienced at Ocean Expo Park, a place where you can even play with dolphins. Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of many popular attractions at Ocean Expo Park.
• With its enormous capacity, a gigantic tank called The Kuroshio Sea Tank, the largest fish in the world, the whale shark and the world's first successfully bred-in-captivity manta can also be seen. Moreover, you can experience the sea of Okinawa when you journey into the deep-sea attraction, which recreates Okinawa's mystery-enshrouded deep sea.
• "Churaumi" was selected as the name of the aquarium by public vote amongst Japanese people. "Chura" means "beautiful" or "graceful" in the Okinawan Japanese dialect, and "umi" means "ocean" in Japanese.
• The aquarium is made up of four floors, with tanks containing deep-sea creatures, sharks, coral and tropical fish. The aquarium is set on 19,000 m. of land, with a total of 77 tanks containing 10,000 m. of water. Water for the saltwater exhibits is pumped into the aquarium from a source 350m offshore, 24 hours a day.
