The Gobbins

The Gobbins

A brand new cliff face experience at the Island Magee, County Antrim is an amazing place to visit. The name comes from the Irish description of the way the cliff faces come out. Over 100 years ago, Berkeley Deane Wise wanted to create an amazing tourism experience which became the immensely popular experience known as The Gobbins.

The Gobbins has to be closed down after World War II because of the many rock falls and erosions that became too expensive to maintain. In 2011, Ireland then invested in a project to re-open the attraction in the summer of 2015. The site now offers an experience like no other and is one of Northern Irelands newest tourist experiences

Starting with an entrance called The Wisest Eye – named after the paths original creator – the path then winds its way through various features such as 15 new bridges on the edge of the sea. View the huge rock fall of 1954 which blocked the original path as well as a massive cave which is said to be have been filled with animal bones. The locals believe that the livestock would actually walk off the cliff! A standout feature is the iconic tubular bridge, which weighs over 5-tonnes. The bridge had to be craned into place as part of the restoration project. Offering a sense of adventure is an incredible 22-meter tunnel that passes under sea level and you may even find some critters hidden in the puddle surrounding you. Make sure you stop and take in the wildlife as you travel along. This location has been noted as a special place of scientific interest because of the bird breeding zones.

Trevor and Caty land at the end of the run and feel a sense of achievement having never experienced something like this before. If you love the cliff-faced landscapes of the coast, you will love this experience.
