Steeped in History
- Maastricht is the capital of the province of Limburg.
- It was the first Dutch city with medieval city rights, making it the oldest city in the Netherlands.
- Its rich history is reflected in the old city centre with its many Roman-style buildings and squares, giving the city a sense of charm and tradition.
- Cobblestones, bridges, and other ancient structures stand as a reminder of the Roman rule in Maastricht.
- Home to just under 120,000 inhabitants, the city is situated on both sides of the river Maas in the south-eastern corner of the Netherlands, practically bordering Belgium and Germany.
- Maastricht was where d'Artagnan, the hero of Alexandre Dumas's “The Three Musketeers”, lost his life during King Louis XIV's siege of the city in 1673. A statue now stands in d'Artagnan’s honor, a few hundred feet from where he was killed.
- Maastricht is well known for its rich gastronomy and the greater Maastricht area features many Michelin Star restaurants.
- Every year, at the end of August, Maastricht hosts Preuvenemint, the biggest gastronomic festival in The Netherlands.
- Maastricht has the highest density of cafés in the Netherlands.
- Brand Beer is the oldest brewery in the Netherlands and is about an hour away from Maastricht.
