It is hard to imagine Holland without its lush green pastures and gently grazing cows, they are as much a part of the national identity as clogs, windmills and tulips. Not surprising, when you consider that the Dutch have been making cheese since 400 AD.

- Holland is the largest exporter of cheese in the world. Its dairy industry has a turnover of around 7 billion Euro’s.
- Edam is a semi-hard cheese that originated in the Netherlands, and is named after the town of Edam in the province of North Holland. It is the second most important cheese in the Netherlands
- Gouda is a semi-hard cheese with a mild to piquant taste, the ageing of the cheese intensifies the flavor and hardness.
- About 50% of the cheese production in Holland is devoted to this iconic cheese, making it Holland’s most important and best-known cheese.
- Edam held commercial cheese markets until 1922. The cheese was brought to the market by local farmers with little boats and was carried to the market by cheese carriers.
- The cheese markets at Woerden and Gouda are the only remaining functioning commercial markets. Farmers from the area continue to have their cheese weighed, tasted and priced here.
- Foodies the world over have long embraced Reypenaer cheese, it is an artisanal Gouda and a two-time Supreme Champion winner at Nantwich International Cheese Show in the UK, the biggest and best cheese awards in the world.
- ‘Boerenkaas’ is the Dutch word that implies ‘farmstead’, meaning it is cheese made from the milk of animals who live on the same farm where the cheese is made.
