Viking offers guests the chance to visit smaller towns and villages you wouldn’t otherwise be able, with Wertheim being one such example.
- Founded in the 7th century, Wertheim is located on the junction of the rivers Tauber and main. It is a beautiful medieval-style town with half-timbered houses and small cobbled streets.
- The town is full of places to check out – St Killian’s Chapel is a striking Gothic chapel built back in 1472, The Angel’s well was constructed in 1574 out of the red sandstone typical to the area, and the clock tower is notable for its two faces, one with just the hour hand, built specifically for the castle residents.
- The Burg Wertheim is without doubt the landmark of the town. Viking offers an optional shore excursion to the castle, and it’s an excursion well worth taking.
- Once the residence of the Counts of Wertheim, this is one of the most picturesque ruins in Germany, complete with a deep moat and bulwark.
- The castle was built on a narrow rock ledge, and the hike up takes you through some stunning landscapes.
- The castle was built in the 12th century, and the Earls who built it became liegemen to the King of Bohemia. The family of Wertheim died out in 1556.
- There was a huge gunpowder explosion in the castle in 1609, caused by a maid that left a candle lit. The resulting fire heavily damaged the castle.
- The view over the town is incredible – if you’re taking the walking tour, be sure to bring good shoes and warm clothing.
