Amsterdam’s Golden Age

Segment: Amsterdam’s Golden Age
Episode: Grand European ep 11
Air Date: 1st March 2020
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Amsterdam has an incredible history, and Viking offers a post-cruise excursion to learn the history of the city’s Golden Age.

  • The 2-day post-cruise extension is like the icing on top of a cake – a chance to learn and experience more beyond the cruise, with the added benefit of a Viking host showing you the city.
  • Amsterdam is famous for its canals, museums and historical sights. It is considered to be one of the most romantic cities in Europe, and is known as the capital of the Golden Age – in the 17th century, it was an important trade centre.
  • The Rijksmuseum opened back in the 1800, and is the largest museum in the Netherlands. Its collection illustrates the history of Holland from the Middle Ages to the present day, with over 8000 objects and paintings.
  • The museum’s masterpiece is Rembrandt’s “Night Watch”, currently undergoing a restoration.
  • The Canal Ring was built during the Dutch Golden Age, comprised of a network of intersecting waterways – 165 fluid channels.
  • The canals had a few purposes, primarily to drain away the swamps that once dominated the land, and in the spaces between the new waterways, building began.
  • The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Canal cruises offering an excellent introduction to the city sights – this is a great way to see Amsterdam.
  • The day finishes with a walking tour, taking in the city’s elegant canal-side mansions.
