Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace is one of Europe’s most beautiful Baroque complexes, and is a must stop on your next trip to Vienna.

  • The Castle was once the summer residence of the Habsburg monarchy, built to rival the sprawling Chateau de Versailles.
  • The original hunting lodge was erected in 1569 by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian II. Schönbrunn translates to ‘beautiful spring’ – the nearby spring was likely the reason there was so much game in the area.
  • The palace and garden complex commenced construction in 1696, and following the 2nd Siege of Vienna was completely redesigned under Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Habsburg.
  • The grand neoclassical Gloriette colonnade was added in 1775, offering sweeping city views.
  • Due to its historical significance, unique layout and magnificent furnishings, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Schönbrunn Palace has a total of 1,441 rooms, with 45 available for the public to visit.
  • The history contained within the palace walls is incredible – Emperor Franz Joseph was born and died here, six-year-old Mozart composed music here, and Emperor Charles I effectively ended the 750-year monarchy.
  • The Palace is open to visitors year round, and is well worth a visit as one of the most spectacular palaces on the planet.
  • The grounds include an orangery and a zoo, as well as a palm house and a desert house – which would have been exotic to the Europeans of the time.
