The Capilano Suspension Bridge should be an absolute must on your Vancouver bucket list! Trevor scouts this fantastic location and reveals some interesting history along the way.
- Just 10 minutes away from the Shipyard District the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is the perfect place to see the Capilano River.
- The name is an anglicised version of the indigenous Squamish Nation name of Kia Palano, which means beautiful river, and it’s not hard to see why!
- The suspension bridge today can hold a 747 fully loaded with passengers but the first bridge built back in 1889 was made out of nothing but hemp rope and cedar planks.
- The bridge is 140m long and 70m above the river and is visited by 1.2 million people every year.
- The bridge is surrounded by a spectacular rainforest, made up of enormous Douglas Firs rising from the ground on the west side of the canyon, with some of the Douglas Firs being up to 1,000 years old!
- The Treetops Adventure experience is made up of seven connected bridges that run between the giant Douglas Firs, with some places being more than 33m above the ground.
- The Cliffwalk, built in 2011 it traverses the canyon for 213m and at its highest point is 91m off the ground.
- The park is a 27-acre nature lover’s paradise, full of walking trails and nature at its finest, the odd thrill mixed with fascinating culture and a great history.
