The beautiful coastline of Newfoundland is rugged and the waters here are incredibly fertile. Our next destination is the community of Francios (pron. Fran-sway), one that you can only access from water or helicopter.

• Francios has a deep harbor which is navigable year-round. The Akademik Ioffe’s captain carefully steers the ship into the fjord. When entering the harbour, we are greeted by one of the few remaining manned light stations on the coast of Newfoundland. Once past the light, we head through the narrow opening leading into the steep-walled rocky ford topped with cloud, it’s an incredibly beautiful sight.
• Francois was settled in the late 1700s, the area was inhabited by small boat fishers harvesting a variety of species during the summer fishing season. Francois’s rich fishing heritage also included operation of a whale factory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
• The community of Francois is mainly a fishing destination for lobster, Atlantic salmon & cod, but today we explore the village and its magnificent surrounds. If your game there are some incredible trails up to the surrounding mountains- the views are well worth it.
